Montgomery County Humane Society

This Used to be a good place for volunteers. The staff is ignorant. Cats are kept in cages and no human is permitted to engage in play with them. Play is extremely important for cats. Much like humans, cats have a critical period to engage with humans. A volunteer who had washed his hands was greeting the cats only to get scolded by the ignorant staff member threatening to put hand sanitizer and threatening he was getting the cats sick. Hint: you cannot get sickness from a person who is not sick. Wear a face mask 😷 and bring hand sanitizer.

This facility should be shut down and no further funding be granted by private membership dues, contributions, foundation grants and bequests. I'm a pet sitter and was hired by a family who needed me to come in and care for a cat that was adopted by their family member who suffers from mental health. The cat was adopted 10/11/23 by the woman with mental health issues and shortly after was removed from the house due to her condition. She didn't return back to the home until 12/2/23 and shortly after was removed again due to her health. I received a call from the family to check in on the cat today because the woman is missing and the family wanted to know if she took the cat with her. When I arrived to the home the cat didn't come out right away, he was scared and hiding. After a few calls of his name he recognized my voice and came out. His behavior was not conducive of a healthy happy cat. After speaking to the family we decided to contact this shelter to find out how we can send him back to be re-homed because of the current situation. I spoke to a male representative of the facility who was not professional and allowed his personal feelings to cause him to make statements that reflects badly on this non-profit. I explained to him that it was in poor judgement to allow this woman to adopt a kitten because it is evident after speaking with her for 3-5 minutes that she suffers from mental issues and someone still allowed her to adopt this cat after going through their process that takes maybe an hour. The family lives out of state and also cares for their mother who has Alzheimer's and is unable to bring the Power of Attorney documents and the cat back anytime soon. All of this was explained to the gentleman over the phone and he would not consider allowing me the "pet sitter" to bring the cat back instead he rather leave the cat in this unhealthy environment. They don't care about animals or the wellbeing of animals. No pet should be left here and they should live up to their statement "we want to make sure each and every pet is homed with the best possible owner."

It's an ok place to volunteer for. Hard-working volunteers walk the dogs in hot and cold weather and help with the cats. While most of the staff members tend to be kind, a few of the staff members could be nicer and more courteous like saying a greeting and introducing themselves and cognizant that many volunteers were with the Humane Society a lot longer than the current staff members. The current staff member do not permit any socializing with the cats. Too bad since cats need play and interaction. The other option is the County shelter.

Used PTO for an appointment that was canceled less than two hours before the day of the appointment. The workers tone was very nonchalant and they did not make any accommodations OR apologize for the inconvenience. They canceled last minute and casually suggested I schedule a new appointment date online with no availability in the current month. FOH

I had a terrible experience at this place. But what can you expect from a place that is paid through the county!? Their only concern is to be there everyday and clock in to make sure they’ll get paid, they don’t care about your dog or even about your time. They bring up excuses and even make up stuff to not see your dog. I wish I could rate ZERO stars.
